Energy Saving Changes

When Jury's Inn hotel first opened it was quickly noted that the utility bills were very high and this naturally led to a push to reduce energy costs. In order to reduce energy consumption and energy policy was created, and objectives set. Monthly meter readings were taken on the first of every month to measure results. By training staff in energy awareness and new energy saving procedures including; 'the switch off policy' and 'the one flush policy' energy consumption began to fall.

Following on from the initial stages of energy saving, new ideas and projects were initiated throughout the 4 year period to continually reduce energy and resource demand. These include:

  • Energy Saving Lightbulbs - May 2005
  • Reducing the water meter size - July 2006
  • Installing Energy efficient A or B rated kitchen appliances - August 2004
  • Hippo Bags - February 2005
  • Keycard system to activate electricity in each bedroom - August 2004
  • Gas sub-metering in the kitchen - November 2005
  • Light Control Sensors - March / April 2007
  • Fridge Timers - November / December 2004

As the staff involvement increased, it was decided that there would be a huge push towards recycling everything withn the hotel. By reducing their waste sent to landfill by 70% over three years, their results for the following areas were recorded:

Year one:

  • Glass
  • Light bulbs
  • Oil
  • Paper
  • Ink Cartridges

Year two:

  • Cardboard

Year three:

  • Plastic
  • Cans
  • Batteries
  • Paint tins

By implementing all of the above changes, the Jury's Inn Glasgow has recieved many awards including the Gold Award by the Green Tourism Awards Agency.
